Houghall Hosts Charity Sleep Out

Last week East Durham College’s Houghall Campus hosted the Centrepoint Sleep Out charity event.

The annual event saw more than 60 people sleep outside to help raise money for the charity which works with young homeless people.

It’s the second time the event has been held in the north east, with the flagship event in London taking place this year for the eighth time - with over 650 people sleeping out at Broadgates Exchange Square.

Event Co-ordinator at East Durham College Dianne Weir said: “We are delighted to help support this great charity and this event. Houghall has been known to record some of the closest temperatures in England so I’m glad they had a mild night.”

As the event continues to grow the organisers hoped to raise over £250,000 to aid homeless people with accommodation, learning and health - but so far they have smashed that total and raised over £300,000 from both Sleep Out events this year.

Jennifer Tennant, a Senior Fundraising Offier with Centrepoint, added: “A massive thank you for allowing us to hold Sleep Out at the College. It went brilliantly. We had loads of local press there and raised lots of cash.”
