Art Exhbibition Comes to EDC

East Durham College was delighted to officially open their first ever art exhibition this week.

Turning The Tide is a set of paintings documenting the story of the East Durham Coalfield Regeneration of the late 90s and will now be on public display at the College’s Campus in Peterlee.

The paintings by celebrated local artist Robert Soden were originally commissioned by Easington District Council (Cultural Development Department) and had been in storage for the last 10 years.

Colin Robson, Arts Officer at Durham County Council and Paul Wheatcroft, Head of Creative Industries at East Durham College were delighted that the painting were able to once again be on show, “We had been looking for a suitable venue to exhibit these wonderful paintings for a number of years. The new building at East Durham College is an ideal location and I hope many local people will come along to see these paintings that recall an important period of the redevelopment of our county” said Colin.

Paul added: “This exhibition is part of a new approach we are taking to promoting both art and artists in the region. Art and design is an important part of the curriculum at the College and an area we are keen to grow and develop.”

The exhibition is open to the public and will be on display until December 2011. Opening times: Monday to Friday 9am till 5.30pm.
